Due to the speed, if played for money, each round of Tonk is played for just a very small amount.
At the start of each round, every player is dealt 5 cards. Before a move is made the game could be won if one player has all of his cards being 10s and picture cards. If this is the case he is paid double the money from every player.
Without this happening, players make their moves by taking a card and discarding a card. The card they take can either be the one just discarded by the opponent next to them or one from the deck which will be totally random.
At some point a player will “knock.” This is the main move in the round and marks the end of the round. Knocking means that a player is laying down a meld (if he has any). At this point the player with the lowest value of cards in his hand wins. Knocking has the advantage of being able to go first but the rule states that after knocking that player has to pay double if he loses.
