You have to been thinking non-stop in Tonk. 100% attention is the key to beating any beginner as you need to keep a eye on all the cards which have been taken and discarded in order to know what to collect and what to discard. You don’t want to give the guy next to you the crucial Jack he needs to win the game even if you want to get rid of the Jack so you can win.
Strategy is therefore needed to start beating good amateur players and having a good knowledge of the maths of the game and the odds of you hitting the exact cards you need will win you more game in the long term.
Simple maths can tell you that if you have two 9s and with 50 other cards in the deck, with you requiring one of the other two nines then it’s a 2/50 chance of you hitting it. But its more complicated as you have to discount all the other cards already seen and in your hand to get the real odds.
Advanced players take this to another level by working out and making a pretty accurate educated guess on the cards of their opponents in order to know all the odds and make the right decision on to first which cards to discard and also on which cards to aim to collect.
